[Revised] Interview Report From My Mom

Interview Transcript From My Mother–Lin

Weiqing: When were you born?

Jing Lin: 1963

Weiqing: Where were you born?

Jing Lin. Fuzhou, China

Weiqing: Mom I know you didn’t go to college, why did you not want to go to college? A while she is thinking, I asked another question :‘‘don’t you want to make a lot money ?’’

Jing Lin: Well, I gave up go to college eventually, after I graduated from high school, I decided to find a job. However, at that time in China, life was hard, not like today. We didn’t have primary schools, not many people can go to college because of some reasons. Having difficult economic hardship, I decided to not go to college. In my  opinion, I think getting a job is more important than go to college. Ever since I first started thinking about going to college, I’ve been looking forward to going but I didn’t. Not just me, there were a lot of people chose not to go to college instead of find a permanent job. Life is very different now, well, I have to say that a College degree would help in starting a business especially in the area of getting partners.

Weiqing: What were the subjects you took when you were a student in high school?   Did you do well ?

Jing LIn: I took Math, Physics, Music, Chinese, English, Art and chemistry. It’s just like today. But the main subjects were Math, Chinese and natural science in the past. My favorite subject was Chinese, and of course I did good job on that. I had problem in Math, I couldn’t understand it well. Given the difficulty and my poor Math skill, it’s no surprise that I did awful in that class. Trying to do my best, I spent more time on that. In my opinion , some of the subjects were useless, like math, when you find a job, you will see the job you want to do will have nothing to do with radicals, algebra, and all this other complicated stuff. Don’t you agree with that?

Weiqing: So What do you expect of me in terms of my education? Why did you want me to attend college?

Jing Lin : College is the door to better opportunities; it’s a place to get a good education and have a bright future; no college means a minimum-wage job. As you know, it’s not like before, I think kids should go to college gain more knowledge and life experience. School should be an enjoyable time for students. For instance, more and more people go to college for their future. Now, college degree is just like an only process, you learn, so you may serve. You might think why you attend college in America not China, because I want you have a good environment to learn. As you know, China is a large population country, it’s hard to find a job after you graduate, also you must have a good GPA, competition is one of the most reason why. But in The United States, the education is such a big different; there is better environment provide for you, the fact that schools in United States are less pressure than schools in  China. Hence, you should do well in college, just try your best, I know it’s  not easy, but if you try hard, you still have a chance to success.

Weiqing: Do you regret not going to college?

Jing Lin: I would like to go to college, but I know it was a dream. If I had this chance and an opportunity provide for me, I will catch it, but it’s too late now and I never think that could happen to me. Just like it happened yesterday, I can’t imagine that I don’t have to go to school anymore. It’s like you miss something, it’s hard to say in words.

Weiqing: Do you think education changed your life?

Jing Lin. absolutely, without education I wouldn’t have gotten the knowledge and life experience that I have received from school, it was a lot fun.

Weiqing: What kinds of options were available for people who didn’t go to college?

Jing Lin: People go to collegecan figure out what to do with their life; college is important on what you want to do with your life. People who didn’t get educated would work low wages jobs to make money, and life is difficult.

Interview Report From My Mom

I was curious about my mom’s educational background, so I have chosen my mom to complete the interview. Not only did I finish the paper by interview but know more about my mom as well. Parents have an enormous influence on their children’s education. Because of this interview, I got to know her thoughts on education, what she expects of me in terms of my education and reasons why she thinks college is important for my future. I never ask her about thoughts on education before, further, I want to thank the professor for giving me this opportunity to know my mom more.

Location: Located at the lower reaches of the Minjiang River, Fuzhou is a coastal city in southeast China, facing the East Sea. )

Reason Why Lin Didn’t Go To college

According to my mother, the time Lin completed high school, she had  decided not to go to college. The truth is, she never wanted college, because at that time in China life was hard; her family was poor, we didn’t have public schools and the tuition fee for college was expensive. The fact that colleges were rare in the past which made difficult for people get into a college, and many people were not able to go to college for different reasons. She said, ‘‘Having difficult economic hardship, I decided not to go to college, and also in my own opinion, I think getting a job is more important.’’ After speaking, I could understand why she had decided not to go to college. Therefore, in her opinion, getting a job is more important than going to college for a degree. The fact that the tuition fee was a big problem forced my mom not to attend college. Lin also stated, ‘‘Life is very different now; I have to say that a College degree would help in starting a business especially in the area of getting partners.’’ In my opinion, although life was hard before, it was easier to find a job; there was much less competition. In other words, now, more and more people go to college, it becomes the place you can get a degree for find a job.

Reason Why College Degree is Important and Why Lin Wants Me To Go To College In NY

When I was interviewing Lin, I asked her about her thoughts on education. While I was asking, she knew she had to answer carefully didn’t want make me think that college is useless. It was always her plan for me to receive a higher education. Despite the fact that she didn’t go to college, she doesn’t want me to feel that education is useless. She stated, ‘‘College degree is just like an only way can making living, you learn, so you may serve.’’ I strongly agree with that, since jobs require degree, and bosses will ask for a degree or work experience. Due to the current economy condition, it’s really hard to find a job. That’s many companies are not taking on too many workers because of the recession. If you can’t fit with the environment, you will be out first. Lin also said,‘‘China is a large population country, it’s hard to find a job after you graduate, also you must have a good GPA, competition is one of the most reason why.’’ The reason why my mom wants me to go to college in The United States is that she thinks sending me to college in The United States would make me a better student than in China. In addition, my friends in China told me that college is extremely difficult for them, and they have to get up very early in the morning for the class, also it ends very late at night, and everyone must attend Saturday program. I am pretty sure they don’t have much ‘free’ time to hang out. I always feel I am lucky that I don’t have that much pressure on me, but I need to try harder in college to achieve my goal. Problem always looks harder at the beginning, but after you know how to deal with it, it will become easier.

The Classes Lin Took in China

In China Lin took classes like today, ‘‘such as Math, Chinese, Gym, English, Music, and Natural science’’. The main subjects were Math, Chinese, and natural science. Courses like Music and English were not be tested, so no one worried about them. It’s different in China now, English becomes one of the three main subjects in China now, it means everyone must taking it and pass the test. when I was a pupil in elementary school in China, students had to take English prepare for the next grade; which is similar to the New York Regent Exams. English was most of important course, and if you failed one of them, you would probably need to take it again, and it would appear on your record forever. There were no marking periods; you had only one chance to pass. She said Math really gave her a hard time, ‘‘some of the subjects are useless, like math,  when you find a job, you will see the job you want to do will have nothing to do with radicals, algebra, and all this other complicated stuff.’’ I strongly agree with that, not because I don’t like math, one of my best subject is math. Some people like math, some people do not. There are some people who like math, some do not, it’s always personal opinion. For the reason why, I don’t think someday in future we need math like Calculus for jobs, or we need it for buy things in supermarket.

Lin Did Regret Not to Go toCollege

I asked Lin, ‘‘do you regret not going to college?’’ Without hesitating, she said: ‘‘I would have like to go to college, but I know it was a dream. If I had this chance and an opportunity provided for me, I would catch it, but it’s too late now and I never think that can happen to me. I have to work and support you; it’s a dream for me.’’ She knew it would be hard to go to college, so she saw “college” like a dream. It was always my parents plan for me to go on to a higher education. However, even if it is a dream for her, why she didn’t try to reach it? If I live in her age, and at the same situation, I think I would probably do the same thing as what my mom did.

Options For People Who Don’t Go To College

Talking to my mother make me feel why do we need to go to school and what kinds of options were available for people who didn’t go to college? The fact that Lin gave up eventually made me feel college is useless at first. Lin said, ‘‘Without education I wouldn’t have gotten the knowledge and life experience that I have received from school, it was a lot fun.’’  Go to college, which is the way to prepare for our future, I very enjoy every class. Lin also said, ‘‘People go to college can figure out what to do with their life; college is important depending on what you want to do with your life. People who didn’t get educated would work low wages jobs to make money, and life is difficult.’’ No one wants to get a low wages job and it’s really tired. Personally, I love learning new things, and for what I want to do with my life, yes I do want to have a college education, and I think college diploma equals success. In my own words, college degree helps to get a good job simple as that.

By the end of the interviews, I know the educational background of Lin, I understand the time really changed. I like the past, because the society was simple, and they had less pressure. My mom also encouraged me to try my best in school. Although college was a dream for some people in the past, it’s my turn now, I want to complete her dream. Though this interview, I know that parenting is not easy. They try their best to satisfy their children. In my opinion, if you ask other parents a question like why did you want your kid to attend college, most parents want their kid to get a well-paying job, my mom, too. I think most of the parent’s thoughts on raising children on their children are the same. Currently, my mom works at a nail salon. Life is going well for all of us. My mom didn’t go to college due to economic hardship, but she hopes that I do well in college. Now, I understand that parents have an enormous influence on their children’s education; my goal is not let her down; I am always ready to play.

1 Response to [Revised] Interview Report From My Mom

  1. salvarez says:

Weiqing, right away I realize I can’t comment on one very important subject for your essay, your mother. What’s her name? Where do you write her name? You need to include her name in the body of your essay. She’s important for your audience to get to know. You should address her either by her first or last name. You use “my mother” and you should revise this to her name, so this way your audience can see her portrait here from a different perspective of not just her son, but also a researcher.

You also only give one really long paragraph with quotes form the text. The other paragraphs read very short, and I noticed that there was a lot of space between paragraphs making it seem like you wrote more than you did. Please don’t do this with your essays.

I like the parts about thinking of children’s education and the influences of parents on their kids. What sorts of influences do you think your mother sees in terms of the children you may have in the future? Do you think she will want you to carry on certain traditions in customs? What kinds of connections would she like for your children to have with your culture?

One revision I’m asking everyone to do is to add three pieces of media to this portrait. It’s up to you what media to add, and also where. They should be illustrations to your portrait here (either images of places, maps, maybe sample from the interview), but they should also be cited in the Works Cited section of your essay.

    For your revisions

–reverse the order of the interview and essay from what you have here. After the Works Cited, you can add the words “Appendix” and then give the transcript from the interview
–Add your mother’s name to the works cited, and make sure you put the order of her name in the correct format.
–Give the citation of your mother’s last name in each paragraph you cite from the interview in parenthesis (Lin).
–Fix the formatting so there are not such big spaces between the paragraphs.
    –Include a descriptive title
–I only see one quote in the body of the essay. I would like to see quotes in each paragraph. Make sure you quote something in each paragraph, practicing PIE paragraphs
–Write a conclusion (after a few weeks–the conclusion isn’t due except for the final version due in May)

Because you didn’t bring in the signed release form, I gave you a 2 out of 5 possible points. When you submit that, your grade will improve to a 3 out of 5. If you go to the Writing Center with a revised version of this essay, I will also increase your score. See me if you are interested. Your final version of this essay is due in May.
